DEPENDENCE ON GOD
I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me, and I in him, he bears much fruit; for apart from me you can do nothing (John 15:5).
The fourth qualification for demonstrating authority over rulers and authorities in the spiritual realm is dependence. A Spirit-filled life is dependent on God the Father. Even Jesus and the Holy Spirit modelled this dependency. Jesus said: “I can do nothing on My own initiative” (John 5:30); “Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you” (John 17:7 NIV); “But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak” (John 16:13).


Spiritual authority is not an independent authority. We don’t charge out on our own initiative like some kind of evangelical ghost busters to hunt down the devil and engage him in combat. God’s primary call is for each of us to focus on the ministry of the kingdom: loving, caring, preaching, teaching, praying, etc. However, when demonic powers challenge us in the course of pursuing this ministry, we deal with them on the basis of our authority in Christ and our dependence on Him. Then we carry on with our primary task. Nor is the spiritual authority of the believer an authority to be exercised over other believers. We are to be “subject to one another in the fear of Christ” (Ephesians 5:21). There is a God-established authority on earth, which governs the social structures of government, work, home and church (Romans 13:1-7). It is critically important that we submit to these governing authorities unless they operate outside the scope of their authority, command us to do something against God’s will, or restrict us from doing what God has commanded. Then we must obey God rather than men.

Stronghold Buster for Pandemic Anxiety

The lie: I cannot stand the stress and anxiety associated with the pandemic and all the changes it has brought about. OR, I’ll only be secure if I know everything will return to normal as I desire.

  • Romans 6:23—“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
  • 1 John 5:12—“Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.”
  • Galatians 2:20—“I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”
  • James 1:5—“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.”
  • Colossians 3:1-3—“Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.”
  • Philippians 4:6-9—“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think about such things.   • Isaiah 26:3—“You (God) will keep in perfect peace (shalom) the one whose mind is fixed on you, because he (or she) trusts in you.”
  • John 14:27—Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”
  • John 16:31-33—“I (Jesus) have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

I renounce the lie that I cannot stand the stress and anxiety associated with the pandemic and the changes it has brought about. OR, I’ll only be secure if I know everything will return to normal as I desire.

I announce the truth that, through faith in the saving work of Jesus Christ, I am forgiven and have passed from death to life (see also Ephesians 2:1-10 and Romans 3:21-26) I announce the truth that, as one who trusts in Jesus for life, I am not called to live on my own strength or wisdom. Rather, it is the life of Christ Himself, as I rely on Him by faith, which enables me to live with strength and wisdom. I announce the truth that as I set my heart and mind on the things of God and put these things into practice, I can trust He will give me peace. I announce the truth that I was not promised a comfortable life because this world is broken as a result of the Fall. (See also Genesis 3, Romans 8:18-27) I announce the truth that Jesus has overcome the world and has given me His peace, therefore, I can have the courage and not be afraid because the God of peace Himself is with me.

Handling Emotions Well

Like everyone else, because of the COVID-19 pandemic,  we are adapting the Freedom in Christ Course to an online interactive call.  Here is session 6 on a most timely subject.

“Fear Not” is Not Enough

I did a search this morning for the phrase “fear not” in the scripture and wrote down God’s response after each “fear not” or “do not fear”.  It’s not enough to say we should not fear, without saying why we shouldn’t.  So often after someone is told not to fear in the Bible, God then reveals his character to them; the why to their fear not.  Here are a few:

  • Fear not…  for God has heard. Gen. 21:17
  • Fear not… for I am with you. Gen. 26:24
  • Fear not… for it is the Lord your God who fights for you. Duet. 3:22
  • Fear not… for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. Duet. 31:6
  • Fear not… for I have redeemed you and called you by name. You are mine. Isaiah 43:1
  • Fear not… you are my servant whom I have chosen. Isaiah 44:2
  • Fear not… for you are more valuable than the sparrows. Matthew 10:31
  • Fear not.. for I bring you the gospel. Luke 2:10
  • Fear not… behold your King is Coming. John 12:15
  • Fear not… perfect love cast out fear. 1 John 4:18
  • Fear not… for I am the first and the last and the living one. I died and behold I am alive forever and I have the keys of death and Hades. Revelation 1:17

A Spiritual EKG

ekgThe Ministry of Freedom in Christ is focused on helping Christians maintain a healthy relationship with Jesus.  Like physical sickness, even those who have been born again spiritually, can develop conditions that block the flow of the Spirit from reaching their hearts

Your pastor may suggest that you participate in the Freedom in Christ Course – sometimes simply referred to as “Freedom” — to check for signs of a spiritual blockage.  Freedom uses a 10-week course to help diagnose and resolve the source of any spiritual or emotional obstructions.

The course itself is safe and gentle. Many people participate in the course, due to the following symptoms:

  • Negative Thoughts
  • Irrational Feelings
  • Confusion
  • Anxiety
  • Difficulty Praying
  • Habitual Sins (Often Secretively)

If you are struggling with any of these symptoms you should consider taking the course.

How should I prepare to participate in Freedom?

Simplify – You will want to prioritize this time in your life to be able to clearly hear from the LORD.  A schedule packed full of activities (even church related) can make the test results difficult to read.  Say “No” to all distractions and “Yes” to seeking the LORD during this time.

Get Back to Basic – A simple approach to daily reading your bible and journaling should be at the core of a healthy biblical spirituality.  This time should focus on “being” in the LORD’s presence, not “doing” things to earn his blessing.

Watch Your Intake – Resist the temptation to self-diagnose. Stay away from endless striving on your digital device or computer attempting to figure out what is wrong in your life.  Participate weekly in the course meetings and give the Lord time to reveal to you the root cause of your issues.

Take Care of Your Body –  Believe it or not symptoms in your life may not only have a spiritual root, (sarcasm) but also a physical one as well.  In this case you should consider making small positive changes in your diet & exercise while participating in the course.   Any reduction in caffeine and/or sugar could have a significant impact to your spiritual and emotional wellbeing. In addition, a 20 to 30 minute walk a few days each week can help clear your mind and allow you to focus on the voice of God.
